Not to be confused with Castle Bowser, a floating fortress featured in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Bowser's Castle, also known as Castle Koopa, is the capital of Koopa Kingdom and a recurring location in the Mario franchise. It first appears in Super Mario Bros. and has appeared in many more games throughout the franchise.

Description[]

Bowser's Castle is a light gray castle serving as the home of Bowser. Its layout and appearance often differs significantly between games. Bowser's Castle is usually where Princess Peach is held captive after being kidnapped by Bowser. The location generally features lava and other fire-based hazards. A structure of Bowser's head can usually be seen on front of Bowser's Castle.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, with the addition of an overworld map screen, Bowser's Castle was given a defined exterior structure for the first time: it was built similarly to a medieval fort, with a likeness of Bowser sculpted onto the front entrance. The castle itself is guarded by a massive military tank in the courtyard. The architectural style of the castle's interior is unique in that it features enormous lava pits and statues of Bowser that emit laser beams upon the approach of an intruder. The castle is also constructed of bricks not found in any of the other fortresses.

In spinoff game series, Bowser's Castle can serve as the setting for a variety of purposes, such as a race course in the Mario Kart series, a golf course in the Mario Golf series, a tennis court in Mario Tennis series, or a baseball stadium in the Mario Baseball series.

Regardless of series, Bowser's Castle is often featured as the last level or course, and its design and hazards are intentionally to make it one of the harder locations. In the Mario Kart games, since Mario Kart 64, various incarnations of Bowser's Castle serve as the penultimate track, followed by an iteration of the Rainbow Road track itself.
