Mario Party
Not to be confused with Bowser's Block Party.

Bowser's Block Battle is the ultimate final boss minigame in Mario Party 9. This and Bowser Jr. Breakdown are the only boss minigames played on Bowser Station, and players do not pick from three boss minigames. It is the only one that cannot be unlocked in Party Mode, due to its absence on all boards except the aforementioned Bowser Station, which is locked until the player completes Solo Mode the first time. As implied by the name, Bowser serves as the boss here, fighting as Super Bowser as he increases in size.

Opening[]

The view is on on the players, who are standing on a platform floating in space. It shifts to the front of the platform as the already enlarged Bowser appears, roars furiously, and pulls the dice out in his hand, tossing them onto the platform.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of this minigame is similar to a turn-based role-playing game where each side takes turns. The heroes take their turn first, while Bowser takes his afterward. On their turn, the players must attack Bowser by rolling dice marked with their own faces and Bowser symbols on the remaining sides. These dice are not typical Dice Blocks but objects that players can pick up and throw if they want to change what faces up. After 10 seconds, the rolls are set and dice can no longer be picked up (dice that are held by players when the time limit is up will be thrown automatically, and the rolls will be included). The dice that show the players' faces will be converted into energy balls that players can be shot at Bowser for points. Players will attack in decreasing order of number of dice with their faces is shown, so those with the most dice makes the first move, and those with the fewest dice take a turn in last place. Players with matched numbers of dice with their characters' faces attack together. After every player attacks, if any dice shows his symbol at the top, Bowser will take his own turn, spitting a trio of fireballs once for each dice to attack, and anybody hit by one fireball will lose a point. If no dice show his symbol, Bowser will grab the board in disbelief and groan in disappointment. Bowser will then throw a new set of dice onto the stage, and the process will repeat. Players cannot be crushed by the thrown dice.

When his health drops below half, Bowser will let out an angry roar before increasing his size even further, making the battle more dangerous. After tossing the dice onto the field, the Koopa King will grab the stage and tilt it from side to side to complicate the players' chances to roll the dice. If he gets any attempts to attack, the fireballs will be larger and faster than before, making them more difficult to avoid. He also gains one new attack: After everyone has attacked with their dice, Bowser will roll a large, spike-edged die with images of the six bosses on it (including his own image). (Fortunately, this die will not crush any players it lands on top of, so players can still make it tumble and change the image it shows.) After it lands, the camera zooms in to show which image is rolled. The die disappears in a puff of smoke, and the players must evade one of six elaborate attacks:

  • Wiggler walks around the arena three times before leaving.
  • King Bob-omb drops into the middle of the arena and makes Bob-ombs fall out of the sky.
  • King Boo summons groups of Boos that spin in gradually expanding circles. The first group spins clockwise or counterclockwise, and the second group spins in the opposite direction.
  • Blooper floats near the front of the arena (where Bowser is) and tosses 10 Urchins at the players.
  • Chain Chomp drops into the middle of the arena and charges at the players. When it hits a wall, it will change direction. Players must dodge a few charges before Chain Chomp leaves the arena.
  • If Bowser rolls his own image on the die, he will launch five waves of fireballs straight ahead. The waves alternate between three and four fireballs, forcing players to weave between them. Bowser may turn to change the direction his fireballs fly in.

Whoever delivers the final attack on Bowser earns an additional three points and the player with the most points at the end wins the game. More than one character can deliver the final blow at the same time, which will result in all of those players getting the bonus at the same time.

Ending[]

Once defeated, Bowser flies into the black hole behind the battlefield and explodes, revealing several Mini Stars in Party Mode and Solo Mode.

Controls[]

This minigame involves holding the Wii Remote sideways. Players use the Plus-control pad to move, the 2 button while their character is standing next to a dice to pick it up, and the 2 button while holding a dice to throw it.
