Mario walking on Boost Blocks

A Boost Block is a block that appears in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. It can only used in multiplayer and use one, the player tap the GamePad screen on the Wii U. They are served as platforms to help Mario and co. progress of a level. They also placing them above the playable character's heads to prevent from falling objects like Thwomps to harm or stopping them or enemies from exiting an pipe. If a player steps on one while a symbol is shown, it releases three coins while filling the meter, through if a player steps a block did not have a symbol is shown, the meter will disappear no matter how full the Boost Meter before disappearing. If a player steps on ten blocks with an symbol on it, the Boost Star appears and the player can use the GamePad and tap to gain the power. They can not used in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

It also appears in the Coin Battle mode, where it used as platforms for the players in a cutscene. This variant featured an icon, and what color will determined by the playable character.

If a player gets 99 lives, they are shrunk into small, square Mini-Boost Blocks, making them more difficult to land an Mini Bloost Block. However, the meter becomes easier to fill because the symbols don't disappear while they are onscreen.
