- Not to be confused with Book, a similar enemy in Donkey Kong 64.
Bookends are an enemy species of haunted books with sharp teeth. They debut in Super Mario 64.
In Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[]
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS Bookends only appear in Big Boo's Haunt. They are spawned from bookshelves when Mario/Luigi/Wario approaches one. Upon emerging, a Bookend's attack is launching itself as its target. If the player's character jumps or punches the Bookend as it emerges, he will be rewarded a Blue Coin which can be useful when going for the 100-Coin Star. If it attacks you, you will lose two health wedges and no reward will be received. It will also disappear if it hits anything.
There is also a different type of Bookend found in the main library on the Mansion's second floor which constantly fly from shelf to shelf. They are smaller and never open their mouths. They also cannot be destroyed in the traditional sense. At the end of the Library, there is a wall with three Bookends sticking out, one must punch in the correct combination (up, down, middle) in order to progress. If the wrong combination is entered, a Bookend will attack the plumbers and the books will reset.
In the Mario Party series[]
Mario Party 8[]
Here are seen hovering in the background in King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, as a result, Bookends in this game are not hazardous to the players at all but rather merely background characters who appear around the board.
Mario Party DS[]
Bookends are featured in the boss minigame Book Bash, particularly within the hallway segment, where they fly toward the player's character.
