Despite being a ghost there isn't much difference between a regular Shy Guy's and a Boo Guy's attack and movement patterns. However, in certain levels they control various traps. One trap involves a single Boo Guy slowly raising a giant spike ball using a chain and a gear-thing, off the ground and then dropping it. However the Boo Guy constantly does this so all Yoshi has to do to avoid it is to wait for when the Boo Guy to start raising it and pass underneath it. This is the safest way since the chain actually harms Yoshi.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time they are common enemies found in Toadwood Forest. It is unknown whether they are wild or loyal to Shroobs. Yoshi Mario & Luigi

A Boo Guy is an enemy in the Yoshi franchise. They first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Profile

Boo Guys are a hybrid between a Boo and a Shy Guy, but more closely resemble the latter. Boo Guys have a ghostly tail like Boos, or ghosts in general.

In Yoshi franchise

Yoshi's Island series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Despite being a ghost, Boo Guys have little difference from Shy Guys with their attack and movement patterns. In certain levels, Boo Guys can be seen control various traps. One trap involves a single Boo Guy slowly raising a spiked mace off the ground and then dropping it. The Boo Guy repeatedly does this, so all a Yoshi has to do to avoid it is to wait for when the Boo Guy to start raising it to ten pass underneath it. This is the safest way since the chain actually harms Yoshi. Boo Guys are one of several enemies that a Yoshi can eat to convert it into a Yoshi Egg.

Boo Guys can spawn from Warp Pipes, and as with most enemies, contact with them causes Yoshi to drop Mario, forcing the dinosaur to fetch him. Boo Guys can be destroyed by stomping their heads, and they can also be swallowed for eggs as well as spat out. If it is spat out without being turned into an egg, the Boo Guy will roll on the ground, destroying any enemies in its path until it hits the screen or a solid obstacle gets in its way.

Yoshi's Island DS

Boo Guys reappear, mostly unchanged from their debut appearance. However, they no longer man traps, with the regular Shy Guy taking that role.

Yoshi's Woolly World

Boo Guys appear as enemies, retaining their behaviour from before. In the level Spooky Scraps! Don't Get Spooked, the titular scraps will cause a Boo Guy in their area to become more aggressive and invincible, causing them to attack by charging in an attempt to eat Yoshi. If Yoshi swallows one, it turns into a white Yarn Ball. Boo Guys return in the remake Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World.

In their regular form, Boo Guys have a body made from loose white yarn, with their mask being held by a brown yarn ring. A Boo Buy behind a Spooky Scrap will morph into a limbless black silhouette with a sharp-toothed mouth and eyes.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Boo Guys make their debut outside the Yoshi series as common enemies found in Toadwood Forest. During battle, Boo Guys attack by creating a mirage, and as both it and its illusory copy approach their enemy, the fake one disappears and the real one attacks by attempting to steamroll the target. However the Boo Guy points at the real target, allowing for distinction. Later on, stronger variations of them named Ghoul Guys are encountered. Ghoul Guys can merge with enemies they fight alongside in order to power them up.

Due to their natural flight abilities, Boo Guys are immune to ground-based attacks. However, they can still get hit by attacks striking from above.

Behind the Scenes

Name

Due to their nature as a Shy Guy variant, Boo Guys have "guy" contained in their name. The "shy" in Shy Guy is replaced with "boo," referencing how ghosts are sometimes portrayed scaring their victims by going "boo," probably due to the Boo Guy's ghostly nature.
