Bonus Stars, also named Goal Stars, are a feature in Super Mario World and its remake Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2.

In Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[]

Mario or Luigi can earn Bonus Stars by touching the moving tape on a Giant Gate. The number he receives depends on how high the tape was when Mario or Luigi touched it (ranging from one to 30, then 40, and lastly 50 if touched at the top). If Mario or Luigi go through a Giant Gate without touching the tape, he receives a coin instead. Getting all 50 Bonus Stars at once from a Bonus Gate earns them three 1-Ups. Mario and Luigi retain their collected Bonus Stars between levels, and reaching 50 Bonus Stars on the counter without getting 50 of them at a time from a Giant Gate does not earn Mario or Luigi three 1-Ups. Once Mario or Luigi earns 100 Bonus Stars, the counter resets, and he is taken to a bonus game for a chance to earn additional 1-Up Mushrooms.

In Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker 2[]

Bonus Stars are no longer a gameplay mechanic, and are only for visual effect in Super Mario World-style levels. Because of this, the "50" reward is replaced by a "1UP" reward.
