"Welcome to bonus stage!"
—Announcer

A Bonus Barrel[1] is a type of barrel in the Donkey Kong franchise. It first appears in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

Description[]

A Bonus Barrel takes the Kongs to a Bonus Level.

Appearances[]

Donkey Kong Country series / Donkey Kong Land series[]

In the Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land games, there is usually at least one Bonus Barrel hidden in most of the levels. When jumped into, the barrel automatically launches or warps the Kongs to a Bonus Area. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs can earn various rare collectibles like Kremkoins, DK Coins, and Bonus Coins to unlock secret worlds and add to the completion percentage. The symbol on the side of this wooden barrel is the letter "B" in front of an orange and yellow explosion. These barrels also replace certain Auto-Fire Barrels in the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country.

In the first two Donkey Kong Country games, if all the bonus levels (including the Bonus Barrels) are found within a level, an exclamation mark will be added to the end of the level name; in Donkey Kong Country 3, the Level Flag will fly fully instead.

Donkey Kong 64[]

In Donkey Kong 64, Bonus Barrels have a picture of a Golden Banana on them, and when approached, purple sparkles appear around them. Bonus Barrels are very common and appear in every course. However, they tend to be either hidden and must be revealed through various means such as pressing a switch, locked away behind gates, or in plain sight but a special ability is needed to get to them.

When a Kong jumps into a Bonus Barrel, it warps with them to a Bonus Stage. If the player beats that mini-game, they are rewarded with a Golden Banana. In Hideout Helm, there are five rooms, with each room containing two Steel Keg versions of Bonus Barrels with King K. Rool's face printed on them and a Banana Medal. Those special Bonus Barrels do not give Golden Bananas, and are instead required to complete to deactivate the Blast-o-Matic and collect the Banana Medals.

Bonus Barrels have a specific variation depicting Cranky Kong's face, Training Barrels, which are featured at the start, and they are used to teach Donkey Kong and the other Kongs essential skills before starting their adventure.

DK: King of Swing[]

In DK: King of Swing, they instead reward Crystal Coconuts for completing their challenges. Collecting all the Crystal Coconuts unlocks Wrinkly Kong to use in the Jungle Jam mode.

DK: Jungle Climber[]

In DK: Jungle Climber, they are used to get a large amount of bananas in the bonus game Banana Bonanza, often resulting in extra lives. One of these barrels can be found in Sun Sun Beach in plain sight.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase[]

In WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, Bonus Barrel appears in the DK Country microgame. It unusually functions like a Barrel Cannon, and the goal of DK Country is for Diddy Kong to shoot from the Bonus Barrel to collect the bananas without touching the Zinger, otherwise he loses.

Nomenclature[]

  • Japanese: ボーナスバレル (Bōnasubareru), meaning "Bonus Barrel"
