Blockhoppers[1] are enemies in New Super Mario Bros.

Profile[]

Physical appearance[]

Their upper half is composed of two Brick Blocks whereas their body is a ? Block. Blockhoppers also wear light blue boots. They have green eyes a black body obscured by the blocks, although it is possible that the blocks may be shadowing their skin.

Blockhoppers are similar to the Pile Driver Micro-Goombas that disguise themselves as blocks from Super Mario Bros. 3. Blockhoppers are also similar to the hopping Fake Blocks and segmented Blokkabloks from Super Mario 3D Land.

Behavior[]

At first, a Blockhopper appears no different from a ? Block with bricks on top of it. Blockhoppers can be told apart from the question mark on their ? Block being motionless. Once Mario or Luigi approaches a Blockhopper, it begins to move. Blockhoppers hop at every vocal "paah" in the background music. If Mario or Luigi is standing on a Blockhopper, it moves in the direction he is faced.

In New Super Mario Bros.[]

In New Super Mario Bros., Blockhoppers appear only in World 2-5. They are harmless when touched from the side because they are disguised as blocks, but they damage Mario or Luigi by landing on him. Blockhoppers can be defeated with a thrown Koopa Shell or a Ground Pound or by running into them using the shell dash ability as Shell Mario. Mini Mario is too small to be able to defeat Blockhoppers.

If Mario or Luigi ground-pounds the ? Block on a Blockhopper, they receive a coin or a power-up item.
