Blockhoppers are enemies that only appear in the game New Super Mario Bros.. They are robots in the form of numerous stacked Brick Blocks as well as a Question Block for the head. They are commonly found amongst regular block stacks but as soon as the plumbers approach the Blockhoppers reveal themselves and start moving towards them. Their behavior is similar to that of the Pile Driver Micro-Goomba from Super Mario Bros. 3. A Blockhopper's head segments can be destroyed with ground pounds however defeating them isn't usually necessary as they can be used to reach high collectibles.

Appearance[]

Their upper half is composed of two Brick Blocks whereas their body is a ? Block. Blockhoppers also wear light blue boots. They have green eyes and black skin obscured by the blocks, although it is possible that the blocks may be shadowing their skin.

History[]

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Blockhoppers are first seen in New Super Mario Bros.. In this game, they only appear in World 2-5 where they can come in several sizes ranging from 1-5 brick blocks (not counting the Question Block head). The level contains many stacked blocks which the Blockhoppers blend in with (the Blockhopper's "?" isn't moving unlike the real Question Blocks). When Mario/Luigi approaches a Blockhopper it starts shaking and walk toward the plumbers. During the "bah" instances of the music they jump and if the plumbers are near, they jump at them, the Blockhoppers themselves are harmless but due to the quality of their feet, contact with their feet as they jump can cause damage. Blockhoppers can be defeated by ground pounding away all the block segments (Small Mario and Mini Mario can only ground pound each segment one by one while all other forms can ground pound them conclusively), defeating a Blockhopper has a chance of it rewarding a Coin, a Super Mushroom, a Fire Flower, or a 1-Up Mushroom from the ground pounded Question Block however in some cases they may provide nothing. Defeating Blockhoppers however isn't always recommended as if the plumbers jump onto one, the Blockhopper will move in the direction the plumbers are facing allowing them to reach higher ledges, especially if the Blockhopper jumps to the "bah" in the music, this can commonly be used to grab some of those too-high-to-reach Star Coins.

Trivia[]

  • In the game's files, there exists an unused variety of a Blockhopper which has a Brick Block for the head rather than a Question Block, said variety never appeared in any levels of the game.
