Super Mario

Blocks, also known as boxes, are a type of object that first appear in Super Mario 64.

Description[]

They are regular-looking blocks, and some of them contain three coins. In Super Mario 64, aside from being larger size, blocks have an identical appearance to the throwable Crates. Mario can stand on top of a block as a platform. In Super Mario 64 DS, they have the appearance of an orange brick instead.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 64[]

Blocks are scattered throughout the various courses, where they can be broken by most of Mario's attacks. In certain courses, such as Dire, Dire Docks and Wet-Dry World, Blocks appear only while an ! Switch is active. In these cases, the blocks are always empty, and they are used more as platforms than containers.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

For this appearance, they are named Bricks, due to having a similar design to them. As such, Bricks have an entirely difference appearance from the Crates. In rare cases, a Brick contains a mushroom. Like with Mario, Luigi and Wario can destroy Bricks using most of their attacks, although Yoshi cannot break them with any of his attacks unless he has eaten a mushroom. The game introduces Black Bricks, which can only be destroyed by Wario.

In Mario Party[]

Boxes appear in the minigame Box Mountain Mayhem, where the goal is to destroy as many boxes as possible, as many of them contain coins and Coin Bags. There are also Whomp Blocks disguised as these boxes, which move the characters who attack them away from the mountain of boxes.
