A Black Shell is an item which first appears in Mario Kart Arcade GP and returns in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

Black Shells are a type of Koopa Shell featured as an unlockable item in all three of its appearances. Despite their name, Black Shells appear to be colored dark purple.
Black Shells function the same throughout their appearances. They function similarly to a Spiny Shell, but unlike a Spiny Shell, a Black Shell can only be launched forward and straight like a Green Shell. Unlike most Koopa Shells, Black Shells are explosive, as they explode upon impact of a wall, obstacle, or other racer, and whoever is caught within its blast radius flips for a second.
Black Shells have a triple variant named Triple Black Shells, which are also unlockable in all of its appearances.
