A Black Hole is a very dangerous object found in the Mario series. They are based on black holes within the real-world. These entities made their debut in the Mario Party 6 mini-game Black Hole Boogie, and would later be featured throughout Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their appearance varies, but often has the appearance of a vortex. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 portray them with red accretion disks and rims, whereas most games just show them as a black orb or sphere.

History[]

Black Holes have a much greater role in the Super Mario Galaxy series, where they act as an obstacle which can suck Mario (or Luigi) into it if he is within their vicinity. Mario (or Luigi) can only be sucked into one if he falls off some ledges or misses the desired target when using a Sling Pod or Cannon. If either one of the plumbers is sucked into a Black Hole, that Plumber loses a life as the Black Hole reduces his Health Meter instantly to zero and devours him, making them one of the strongest hazards in the game. Black Holes are usually impossible to avoid once the player has fallen off a platform and into outer space, though this obviously does not apply if Mario is in possession of a power-up that grants him the power of flight, or something along those lines, such as the Bee Mushroom, the Boo Mushroom, or the Cloud Flower. They are, in a way, the equivalent of bottomless pits found in most other Super Mario series games.

However, Mario or Luigi can also use Black Holes to their advantage. For example, any enemies or objects that fall into a Black Hole are destroyed after falling a certain distance toward it, so Black Holes can sometimes be used to destroy certain enemies in various areas. Note that any enemies destroyed by falling into Black Holes do not yield any items whatsoever. Likewise, any items that do get released by enemies that are destroyed while over a Black Hole are quickly enveloped by the Black Hole and removed as well. In some cases, Black Holes transform into a Power Star after a certain task has been completed; i.e. collecting the notes in the Hurry-Scurry Galaxy. Mario or Luigi are then pulled to the Power Star by gravity in the same way as with the Black Hole with a red line. If Bee Mario is sucked into a Black Hole he will leave a yellow line. If Cloud Mario is sucked into a Black Hole, he will leave a white line.

SMG Black Hole ending

The supermassive Black Hole created by Bowser's collapsing sun.

At the end of the game, after Mario has defeated Bowser for the final time, his gigantic sun collapses into a massive Black Hole, which will quickly begin to engulf Mario, Princess PeachBowser's entire fleet of Airships, Princess Peach's Castle and the Comet Observatory. Just as everything is about to be destroyed, Luma suddenly appears in front of Mario, waves at him and then sacrifices himself by throwing himself into the Black Hole. Thousands of other Lumas soon join him in flinging themselves into the massive Black Hole in hopes of stabilizing it and ultimately saving the universe from destruction. Eventually, the Black Hole twists wildly around in space before finally exploding in a new "big bang", thereby reforming the entire cosmos and creating an entirely new galaxy, which Mario is welcomed by in the final cutscene of the game. Also, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Bowser is sucked into a Black Hole when transitioning to his third phase and again upon defeat.

Another black hole appears in Mario Party 9, in the background of the final boss mini-game, Bowser's Block Battle. It seems to suck in large planets, and also Mini Stars. When the players defeat Bowser, the Koopa King once again stumbles into the black hole, although in the final cutscene, it is shown that Bowser and Bowser Jr. can normally fly inside the black hole with their Koopa Clown Cars.

Black Holes are also used in attacks by Fawful's Super Peach's Castle of Fury in the game Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Their appearance is similar to a spiral galaxy in that they resemble a black swirl with multiple "spiral arms".

Black Holes can come in different sizes in Super Mario Galaxy and in Super Mario Galaxy 2, though this does not necessarily correlate with their event horizon size. Some small black holes can be really massive, like the black hole in Space Junk Galaxy in the Silver Stars area in Super Mario Galaxy. Same with large black holes, they can be massive or not massive. Black holes can sometimes be for decoration, such as beneath the tower on the Dreadnought in the Dreadnought Galaxy. In this case, falling into their event horizon does not result in Mario getting sucked in.

Luigi's Mansion 3 does not feature genuine Black Holes, but during his Final Phase in Luigi's Mansion 3, King Boo turns the painting within whose depths Mario, Princess Peach, Professor Elvin Gadd, and three Mushroom Retainers (Toad included) are trapped into a giant black hole-like entity that devours the hotel. Thus, Luigi has only four minutes to defeat his nemesis from that point. After Luigi defeats King Boo, the painting reverts back to normal.

Locations[]

First Super Mario Galaxy game[]

  • Gateway Galaxy: The first Black Hole is inside the second planet; if Mario falls into a hole, he will be devoured; the Luma near his landing point will tip him off about it when she is spoken to.
  • Good Egg Galaxy: Four Black Holes appear in this galaxy.
    • When Mario traverses an apple-esque planet during the mission Dino Piranha, he must be wary not to fall into the gaps, lest he be devoured by one.
    • There is also a secret path with Flipswitch Panels; Mario has to stay on the path to avoid getting devoured by the Black Holes there.
    • King Kaliente's Battle Fleet: When Mario blasts off from the saucer-shaped planet that has the rolling Chomps, he will land on an Airship. This Airship and another have been suspended above a Black Hole; Mario will be devoured by the Black Hole if he falls off their decks or the bridge that bridges the gap between them.
  • Honeyhive Galaxy: Found beneath every planet except for the hat-shaped and rattle-shaped planets.
  • Flipswitch Galaxy: Inside the cuboid Starting Planet; Mario must be wary of the gaps lest he falls in.
  • Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor: Inside the Starting Planet.
  • Space Junk Galaxy: Beneath the area where some Space Junk platforms can form the path.
  • Battlerock Galaxy: Underneath the semispherical planet whose flat side Mario can walk on.
  • Hurry-Scurry Galaxy: Beneath the Starting Planet and inside the Shrinking Satellite.
  • Sling Pod Galaxy: Beneath the entire stage.
  • Bowser's Star Reactor: Near the Gravity section and under the first section of the area that leads to the staircase that leads to the boss.
  • Beach Bowl Galaxy: Under the secret planet that Mario visits for Wall-jumping Off Waterfalls. The Cyclone Stone also has a black hole that plagues each head of the structure.
  • Bowser Jr.'s Airship Armada: Beneath the Skyships.
  • Ghostly Galaxy: Beneath the mansion and Bouldergeist's arena.
  • Freezeflame Galaxy:
    • Underneath the frozen peak where Baron Brr makes his lair.
    • Surrounding the ice and lava platforms.
  • Honeyclimb Galaxy: Beneath every Honeycomb Wall Planet.
  • Bowser's Dark Matter Plant: Beneath the first section of the second planet lies a Black Hole.
  • Gold Leaf Galaxy: Beneath the main planet.
  • Sea Slide Galaxy: Inside the second Shrinking Satellite.
  • Toy Time Galaxy: Beneath the second planet of Heavy-Metal Mecha Bowser, the cake conveyor belt, the frozen area, and the Undergrunt Gunner's planet. A Black Hole can also be found within the cake on the Spinning Cake Planet.
  • Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor: The Starting Planet is a small spherical cluaster of asteroids that must be traversed with a Black Hole infesting the middle.
  • Dreadnought Galaxy: Beneath the Chibi Wanwan path and the Dreadnought's Tower.
  • Melty Molten Galaxy: Inside the Stone Octagon Planet; Mario will be devoured by the Black Hole if he falls into the gaps.
  • Bubble Blast Galaxy: Beneath each visited planet.
  • Bowser's Galaxy Generator: If Mario falls off the tower with the gravity walls, he will get devoured by a Black Hole at the base.

Trivia[]

  • Bowser has actually been sucked into a Black Hole thrice before: once after Mario defeats him for the first time in the final battle of Super Mario Galaxy 2, another time after Mario defeats him for the second time during the same battle (though the second Black Hole seems to be slightly larger than the first, and also sucks up the background with it). Princess Peach and the final Grand Star are shot out of the remains of the Black Hole several seconds later. And finally a third time when defeated in Mario Party 9s Bowser Block Battle mini-game.
  • In real life, a Black Hole is what remains of a large, heavy star if it collapses upon itself following a supernova explosion; its force of gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
  • For some reason, in galaxies with the Star Ball, if the player falls into the black hole, it will not suck the player in. This may be because Star Balls are too large in their intact state.
  • Luigi's Mansion 3 is the first time a Black Hole appears, albeit it is actually a painting that was supersized so it could devour the hotel, causing a four minute time crunch.
