- Not to be confused with Nitpicker, which Birds are sometimes identified as, or Birds, an enemy introduced in Donkey Kong for Game Boy.
Birds are a recurring species in the original Donkey Kong series. They first appear in Donkey Kong Jr.. They are a variant of Nitpickers, but have sometimes been named Nitpickers themselves.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
In many of their appearances, Birds resemble a raven.
Behavior[]
In Donkey Kong Jr., like the Nitpickers in the Jump Board Scene, a Bird flies horizontally across the screen, descending progressively as it meets its margins. After performing four of these flights, a Bird goes offscreen. A difference with Birds is that they do not bombard Donkey Kong Jr. with eggs. In the Atari 2600 version, only one Bird flies left-to-right at the bottom of the stage. In the Intellivision version, Birds fly off the left or right side of the screen. In WarioWare Gold's namesake microgame, Donkey Kong Jr., Birds fly in a straight line from left to right, across the ropes.
In Donkey Kong for Game Boy, there is a bird nest where two Birds can spawn at a time. After it slowly rises from its nest, a Bird flies horizontally across the room, moving down a short distance and turning back upon reaching the screen boundaries. A Bird does three complete flights before fleeing outside of the stage. Unlike their original appearance, Birds now drop eggs to attack if it flies above Mario. In this game, both Hawks and the other Bird enemy have an identical behavior to Birds.
In Donkey Kong series[]
Donkey Kong Jr.[]
Birds are first encountered in the Chain Scene. Donkey Kong Jr. can defeat a Bird by dropping a fruit onto it, like with Nitpickers.
Donkey Kong Jr. Math[]
Only one Bird appears in the +-×÷ Exercise mode. The Bird hovers over the chains, showing which position Donkey Kong Jr. should fill, and if he made any mistakes, the Bird also points this out.
Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]

A single Bird nest makes an appearance in Stage 9-4, a boss stage that resembles the Chain Scene from Donkey Kong Jr.. Mario cannot defeat Birds, given that Stage 9-4 does not feature any objects that can be used against the Birds, so Mario instead has to avoid them. If Mario is hit by a Bird's egg, he loses a life, although his
In Family BASIC[]
A Bird is one of the three programmable bird characters. It also makes a cameo appearance on the Message Board.
In WarioWare Gold[]
In the Donkey Kong Jr. microgame, Birds only appear in level 3, in which Junior has to avoid two of them while climbing the ropes.
