Binoculars are a recurring object in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario 3D Land.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario 3D Land[]
If Mario or Luigi steps on a green platform in front of Binoculars, he can look through the lens and get a view of the area. The player can control the Binoculars by moving the Nintendo 3DS around, utilizing its gyro-sensor control. The L and R buttons are used to zoom out and zoom in, respectively. Sometimes, there is a hidden Toad, and if sighted through the Binoculars, he throws out an item to assist Mario, such as a Star Medal or a 1-Up Mushroom. The image within the binoculars appears as 2D even if the system has 3D mode turned on.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
Unlike before, Mario can instead use Binoculars by capturing them with Cappy. In doing so, the Binoculars launch up a set distance before usage. This allows Mario to see certain Power Moons and even get some, like Taxi Flying Through Bonneton.
