Big Star Door is a type of door which appears in Super Mario 64 and its remake Super Mario 64 DS.

Description[]

The Big Star Door is a dark wooden door depicting a Power Star on the front. They are a larger counterpart of Star Doors and have a wider, more prominent appearance than them, likely because most Big Star Doors lead to a course where Bowser is fought. There are a total of four Big Star Doors, and like regular Star Doors, each of them requires at least a minimum number of Power Stars to open, the number of which is considerably higher than that of a regular Star Door. Like regular Star Doors, the same animation of Mario holding out a Power Star that spins before dissipating is used when unlocking a Big Star Door. Whenever a Big Star Door is entered, its two sides slide into the walls before sliding back together.

In Super Mario 64 DS, Mario is the only one of the four playable characters who can unlock a Big Star Door. Once he unlocks a Big Star Door, any character can enter it.

In Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[]

The first Big Star Door is found on the main floor, and it leads to Bowser in the Dark World. It requires at least eight Power Stars to open, or twelve in Super Mario 64 DS.

The second Big Star Door is found on the basement floor. Entering it leads to Dire, Dire Docks and Bowser in the Fire Sea. Unlocking it requires at least 30 Power Stars.

The third Big Star Door is found on the third floor, accessed from the staircase found in the lobby of the second floor. It leads to a room where Tick Tock Clock, Rainbow Ride, and Wing Mario Over the Rainbow can be accessed, and is the only Big Star Door to not lead directly to one of Bowser's courses. Unlocking it requires at least 50 Power Stars.

The fourth and final Big Star Door is accessed in the very room that the third Big Star Door leads into. This Big Star Door leads up to Bowser in the Sky. While it technically does not require any Power Stars, entering this Big Star Door without at least 70 Power Stars (80 in Super Mario 64 DS) results in the staircase being endless. In Super Mario 64 DS, even if the requirement is met, only Mario can go up the stairs, as Bowser only wants Mario to fight him, so the stairs remain endless for Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario regardless.
