Super Mario Paper Mario

Big Chain Chomps are a recurring enemy in the [[{{{1}}} (franchise)|{{{1}}} franchise]], especially the Super Mario series and Paper Mario series. They first appear in Super Princess Peach.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Aside from being larger size, Big Chain Chomps essentially have the same appearance as a regular Chain Chomp, which they are a variant of. Despite their name, Big Chain Chomps do not have a chain attached to them in their debut appearance, Super Princess Peach, ambiguously making them a variant of either a Chomp or a Chain Chomp for the game.

In Super Princess Peach[]

Big Chain Chomps are first encountered in Ladida Plains 1-7. They usually are found rolling down hills, serving as an obstacle that players must avoid. On occasion, they can be seen falling into pits, similarly to Incoming Chomps from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

In Super Mario series[]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

A Big Chain Chomp appears during Iggy's battle in World 5-Castle. At first, it was a regular Chain Chomp, but just before the battle starts, Magikoopa uses his magic to enlarge it into a Big Chain Chomp.

During the battle, the Big Chain Chomp pulls a rail-based carriage that Iggy rides in, as it hops around the platforms of the room. Each time Iggy is stomped, the Big Chain Chomp gets red and angry, similarly to Wiggler, but the sound of a train whistle can be heard during this. Following this, the Big Chain begins to move faster temporarily. Once Iggy has been stomped three times, the Big Chain Chomp is defeated alongside him.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

A Big Chain Chomp returns to assist Iggy during his battle in World 2-Castle. It behaves similarly as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but is somewhat smaller, and uses more paths due to the difference in room layout. The Big Chain Chomp is defeated the same way as in the previous game.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]

Big Chain Chomps appear in all three games, where they can be created by dragging a Super Mushroom onto a regular-sized Chain Chomp.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Both Big Chain Chomps and normal-sized Chain Chomps appear. Here, they are used to break open large rocks and help Mario access mountainside that are particularly out of reach.

One is also owned by Madame Broode, who calls it Chain Chompikins.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Big Chain Chomps are required to reach Petey Piranha, the guardian of the fifth Royal Sticker in Rumble Volcano.

While they can be stomped on while asleep, the Big Chain Chomps are indestructible. Instead, they play an important role in solving puzzles. The player must hammer their post down while the Big Chain Chomps are asleep, then use any attacks against them before they wake up. Then, the Big Chain Chomp will attack the player with an unavoidable lunge, causing damage. Since the Big Chain Chomp frees itself from its post, the battle will suddenly end.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

There is a Chain Chomp named Princess, who eventually becomes a Big Chain Chomp through Kamek's magic. She is made of four black intertwining pieces of cardboard, with a pink bow at the top.

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

Only one Big Chain Chomp appear, and Iggy and Morton use it for one of their attacks.
