Big Boos (also called Mega Boos) are a large sub-species of Boo which first appear in Super Mario World.
Profile[]
Usually, Big Boos behave very similarly to regular Boos and maintain a steady resemblance, except that they are bigger in size. Big Boos are commonly found in Ghost Houses and some are seen residing in Big Boo's Haunt. Big Boos are commonly more durable than a standard Boo and take more hits to defeat; like their smaller counterparts, Big Boos are lead by the regal King Boo. Some of them also act as leaders to the Boos.
History[]
In the Super Mario series[]
Super Mario World[]
Big Boos inhabit various Ghost Houses around Dinosaur Land. Despite them being about three times the size of regular Boos, these enemies behave in the same mannerism as their smaller counterparts, meaning that they have all the same traits, such as fading and hiding behind his arms if looked at, occasionally peeking to see if he is still being watched. However, if Mario or Luigi's back is turned, they can attack the two from behind by slowly approaching them for a ramming attack.
Normally in the game, Big Boos serve much more difficult to pass than their smaller brethren. As such, Mario or Luigi might be required to use a Springboard to jump over these massive ghosts or use a Spin Jump over them while running fast. Additionally, you may also use a Cape Feather to glide over Big Boos or perform a sliding Cape Attack during descent to defeat the Big Boo. You can also Spin Jump on the Big Boo. Additionally, in the Donut Secret House, there is a Big Boo found in a secret room as a hidden mini-boss. Throwing Grab Blocks at him enough times defeats him along with the two Boos he is accompanied with in battle.
Super Mario 64[]
Big Boo reappears in Super Mario 64 in Big Boo's Haunt, where they act in the same manner as regular Boos do so once again. One can be found in the hallway when first going out into the courtyard and it goes down into the courtyard. Mario must find the Big Boo and perform a Ground Pound on it or run around behind, then dive or punch to release the entrance to Big Boo's Haunt, which shrinks anyone who enters to fit inside of the area. There are three more Big Boos found there; one can be found on the top of the balcony on which Mario must defeat in order to gain a Power Star. Another one can be found on the bottom floor of the area, while one more can be found in the first mission in the front entrance when defeating all of the regular Boos in the mansion, excluding the lowest floor. Defeating that Boo summons stairs to come so that Mario is able to collect one of the Power Stars once again. Big Boos behave identically to standard Boos however, they are stronger as they do more damage than a standard Boo. You can sneak up behind a Big Boo and get it in a lock against a wall to repeatedly attack it against the wall as it recovers to defeat it with ease.
Super Mario 64 DS[]
Big Boos appears once again, retaining the same role as in the original Super Mario 64. Additionally, King Boo (mistakenly referred to as Big Boo) also appears in this game as a boss, where he is the one responsible for capturing Luigi in a locked room. The course he is fought in is Big Boo Battle, and the course's entrance is located on the third floor near the balcony. You can get here by either using Balloon Mario (from the Power Flower), preforming a precise Triple Jump, wall jumping from the adjacent wall, or backflipping from the Question Block (which can only be done if the ? Switch in Tower of the Wing Cap is activated).
New Super Mario Bros.[]
Although Big Boos don't appear in New Super Mario Bros., a similar Boo called the Balloon Boo did. These Boos can inflate themselves to become about the size of a Big Boo.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Big Boos make their official New Super Mario Bros. franchise debut in New Super Mario Bros. Wii where they can be found in various Ghost Houses in the game. They act identically as they did in Super Mario World, but are almost always with a crowd of regular-sized Boos on their side and this time, they are merely enemies rather than mini-bosses. A Big Boo is also seen covering the second Star Coin in World 7-Ghost House, it must be lured into moving out of the way before revealing the Star Coin. Just as before, Big Boos are nearly invincible and can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Big Boos make a reappearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in Haunty Halls Galaxy in the mission, "Sneaking down the Corridor". They always appear in a group of five with the one in the middle being the biggest. In this game, Big Boos are commonly joined by smaller Boos appearing as Mario/Luigi walks down the corridors and chasing him. Big Boos can not be defeated in any way and must be escaped. It is also worth noting that Big Boos in this game are much larger than their incarnations in previous games.
Super Mario 3D Land[]
Big Boo appears in the Ghost House course World 4-4. This Boo chases down Mario through a small maze of platforms and then some moving platforms. At the end of this path is a Starman that Mario can use to defeat the Big Boo.
The Big Boo later reappears in World 5-3, another Ghost House, appearing at the end of the level. Mario must walk along a small tightrope, and upon reaching the middle, a Big Boo appears on the far side. Mario must jump over the Boo to reach the other side with the door to the level's Flagpole.
Another Big Boo again appears in the level World 8-4, another Ghost House. It appears on the final reversible platform in the level, near the end of its usage.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Big Boos return in New Super Mario Bros. 2 retaining their behavior from past games. They are still as shy as ever and slowly come after you when you turn away. Big Boos can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman, Gold Flower, or Invincibility Leaf. Big Boos are also among the enemies to be affected by the Gold Ring, when activated, they become Gold Big Boos; while in their golden state, they turn and flee leaving massive Coin trails behind in their wake. There's also a Coin bonus for defeating a Gold Big Boo. In World 6-Ghost House, Big Boos are seen on the huge side of the level (while the other side has regular Boos) and these Big Boos are commonly seen covering ? Switches which need to be activated to reveal hidden areas of the level. Big Boos appear in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World Mushroom-Ghost House, and World Flower-Ghost House. This game also introduces the largest known species of Boo (even larger than the Big Boo), The Boohemoth.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Big Boos return in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, retaining their behaviour from the earlier games. They are commonly found in Ghost Houses, just like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Big Boos can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman. They appear in levels such as Swaying Ghost House and Spinning Spirit House and they're mainly found in the Ghost Houses of the games.
Super Mario 3D World / [[Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Big Boos are back in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury retaining their behavior from Super Mario 3D Land. In these games, they are commonly found in Ghost Houses and other dark levels such as Deep Jungle Drift. They reveal themselves when the heroes approach their area and pursue them when their backs are turned, one such example is in Shiftier Boo Mansion where tagging the Fake Flagpole causes a trio of Big Boos to appear. Like most previous games, Big Boos can be defeated with the effects of a Starman, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell, causing several coins to appear at the site of their death. The new Light Box can also be used to defeat a Big Boo with greater ease.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]
Big Boos appear in Super Mario Maker as well as it's two sequels as placeable enemies. In this game, Big Boos can be made by giving a Super Mushroom to a Boo. Big Boos retain their behaviour the mainline games and can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman, they can be placed in all themes and can also be given wings to become a Winged Big Boo.
In Yoshi's Safari[]
Big Boos appear in the level Ghost Mansion, which marks their second appearance as a boss. If one is shot by Yoshi's Super Scope, it causes a wall fall on Big Boo and it splits up into three regular Boos. Yoshi wins a task if he then shoots the Boo with its tongue sticking out.
In Hotel Mario[]
Big Boos can be found in Ludwig's Thump Castle Hotel as powerful enemies being about 1/6th the size of an entire hotel floor. They act, once again, like regular Boos and as they did in Super Mario World.
In the Yoshi's Island series[]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]
Big Boos appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as an enemy in the game and appear in certain towers and castles. They are like regular Boos but are three times bigger than the Boo. They act the same as regular Boos do in this game and can be defeated when Yoshi faces it and shoots an egg at a wall and then at the face. They release five Stars when defeated. A larger Boo named Bigger Boo also appears as a mini boss in this game.
Yoshi's Island DS[]
Big Boos reappear in Yoshi's Island DS where they once again are enemies found in towers and castles and act the same as they did in the predecessor. They first appear in Bessie Bass' Battleship and later appear in other levels as well such as Yoshi's Island Easter Eggs. A Big Boo can be defeated by tossing an egg at a wall and ricochetting it back into a Big Boo, through this, a Big Boo can also be made to appear in the Museum, they are found in the Haunted House Exhibit. Hector the Reflector a boss in this game appears as a boss and appears to be the Invisighoul equivalent of a Big Boo.
Yoshi's New Island[]
Big Boos return in Yoshi's New Island retaining their behavior from the past games, and Yoshi commonly meets them in forts such as Beware the Boo Brigade. Big Boos can be defeated in the same ways as well, toss an Egg at a wall and ricochet it to hit the Big Boo (while it's moving). This is also the first Yoshi's Island game to not have a Boo (or any related species) as a boss.
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Big Boo makes a cameo appearance in this game is used as a part of Bowser's Terrorize move.
In the Mario Party series[]
Mario Party[]
Big Boo has also made several appearances in certain mini-games. A single Big Boo chased a group of characters in the mini-game Running of the Bulb. In this game, the Big Boo was chasing the characters across a dungeon. If a character touches the Big Boo, then they are eliminated from the mini-game. If Big Boo manages to get the light bulb, then every character will lose the game.
Mario Party 2[]
Big Boo's main role as a non-playable character is in Horror Land. In this game, Big Boo appeared in the upper corner of the board behind a locked door that required a Skeleton Key to open. During the daytime, a giant Big Boo statue was behind the door, however, during the night, a character can encounter an enormous Boo, who will steal either coins from all players for a fifteen coin fee or steal a star from all players for a 150 coin fee.
In the mini-game Skateboard Scamper, a giant Big Boo chases a group of characters on skateboards across a haunted mansion that is filled with traps. If a Big Boo captures a character in this game, then that character is automatically eliminated.
Mario Party 4[]
The same Big Boo reprises its role in Boo's Haunted Bash in Mario Party 4. In this game, the characters needed to step on a set of happening spaces three times in order to activate the large grandfather clock in front of the Big Boo. The Big Boo in this game functions the same as the one in Mario Party 2. The Big Boo steals coins for 15 coins or a star for 150 coins (from all three targeted players). The targeted players (if the Big Boo steals coins) can lose less coins by tapping "A". But they can't fight back (if he steals a star from them).
The Gaddlight (an item which allows the player to scare away a Boo --at a Boo's Crystal Ball from a player who summons a Boo-- when he is after their stars or coins) does not work. (That is, even if all three targeted players have a Gaddlight.) Since this item has no effect with the Big Boo, the victim(s)/targeted player(s) are forced to watch and get their stars and/or coins stolen from the Big Boo.
Mario Party Superstars[]
Big Boo returns as part of the Horror Land board.

In Game & Watch Gallery 4[]
Big Boo appears as one of the opponents whom Luigi fights in the Modern version of Boxing. Big Boo uses Boos to pummel Luigi instead the regular boxing gloves.
In Mario Pinball Land[]
A Big Boo is one of the four major bosses. He holds the final Star Key and appears in the area, Fun Fair. During his battle, the Big Boo can turn invisible, becoming completely invincible until the invisibility wears off. The ghost can be attacked in his visible form when Mario hits him from the back, and the Big Boo is defeated in three hits to his backside. After the Big Boo's defeat, Mario gains all four Star Keys and is able to progress onward. When fought, he has a 3/4 time theme.
In Super Princess Peach[]
Big Boo appears in the levels Shriek Mansion and Bowser's Villa, acting the same as usual, but Big Boo can also be permanently stunned by light. These enemies can be used as platforms when stunned and cannot harm Peach in any kind of way while stunned. Other than that, Big Boos are completely invincible in this game. There are also new enraged subspecies in this game called Mad Big Boos. These enemies attack in the opposite way to their "normal" counterparts, charging anyone who looks at them and standing still normally.
In the Paper Mario series[]
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door[]
- "(Laughing.) You said you'd be nice! Let's get him, guys!"
- —A Boo prior to absorbing 199 other boos to become Atomic Boo in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Big Boos make their debut in the Paper Mario franchise in this game, where a Boo absorbs 199 other members of his species, transforming into a Big Boo named Atomic Boo who acts as a miniboss in the Creepy Steeple. Atomic Boo reverts back to his regular form and regurgitates the Boos he absorbed upon defeat, dropping the Lucky Start Badge.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]
Big Boo appears as a mini-boss in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. It is fought at the end of The Enigmansion after Kamek combines all of Mario's caught Boos in the Book of Sealing. It comes into the battle with 100 HP. The Vacuum Thing Sticker, the Infinijump Stickers, or the Spike Helmet stickers makes the fight with the Big Boo extremely easy. When it turns invisible, Mario must use a spray-based thing sticker such as the Soda or the Squirt Gun to make it visible again. While it has a unique theme before battle, it shares the same mini-boss music as the rest.
In the Luigi's Mansion series[]
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]
A Big Boo comprised of 10 normal Boos is battled in the Treacherous Mansion in the Train Exhibit. This is not the same Big Boo as Boolossus because Boolossus was made of 15 Boos instead of 10. His attacks involve charging and trying to smash Luigi by stomping, and if pulled on for too long, he will immediately use the charge attack. To defeat him, Luigi must either launch or lure the Big Boo into hitting the front drill of an encircling train, causing him to pop. The ten Boos will all be stunned, and Luigi has to launch all of them into cars on the train. After a minute, the "Big Boo" will reabsorb those of his nine allies who were not captured and continue the fight.
In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]
Big Boos appear in the original Wii U version and its ports for both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch, retaining their behaviour from Super Mario 3D World and just as before chase after Captain Toad and Toadette. They are commonly seen guarding Items and Power Stars and appear as Captain Toad and Toadette approach, they can be defeated via light from the Toads' headlamp. Big Boos are commonly seen in haunted-themed levels such as Bizarre Doors of Boo Mansion.
In the Mario & Luigi series[]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]
In the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser campaign, Big Boos are an obtainable Flying troop, and their special attack is Piercing Projectile. Their in-game description is "A big ol' Boo. It's slow, but it flies and has incredible HP and POW."
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]
Big Boos appear as recruitable minions during the Bowser Jr.'s Journey campaign. They are classed as flying soldiers and have a great advantage against melees. Due to their size, Big Boos pack quite a punch against the weaker foes.
Trivia[]
- Despite Boolossus being made of fifteen Boos and Atomic Boo in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door having two-hundred Boos creating him, Boolossus is considerably bigger.
- This is also similar to how in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, a Big Boo is composed of 100 Boos and in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, one is composed of only 10 Boos.
- Oddly enough, the Big Boo in Super Mario 64 has the high pitched laugh of a normal Boo, but has the low grunt of a Thwomp when he is hit. In Super Mario 64 DS, the grunt was replaced with the defeat squeal of the Spindrift and Scuttle Bug.
