Big Cheep Cheeps, originally known as both Boss Basses and Big Berthas and later as Mega Cheep-Cheeps, are large Cheep Cheeps that appear throughout the Super Mario franchise.

History[]

Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Big Bertha NES

The passive Big Bertha is found swimming back and forth underwater in World 3-5, World 4-1, World 6-9, and World 7-4. Here, she carries Baby Cheeps in their mouth, and occasionally letting them out. After a few seconds, the parent gets its baby back in its mouth, though occasionally, the Big Bertha may not retrieve its baby. The Big Bertha can be defeated with the use of the Fire Flower, Starman, Hammer Suit, Super Leaf, or Tanooki Suit; in doing so, Mario or Luigi earn 100 points.

Unlike the Boss Bass, the Big Berthas remain underwater. Big Berthas aren't as aggressive as the Boss Bass however they may try to swallow Mario or Luigi if he gets too close, resulting in an instant death, although the Big Bertha will ignore the plumbers entirely if they're wearing a Frog Suit.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

The Big Bertha returns in Super Mario 64 DS replacing the Bubba from the original. Big Berthas reside on the huge side of Tiny-Huge Island and behave the same as a Bubba. They will constantly make attempts to eat you however, the Big Bertha can be defeated with the use of the Mega Mushroom, unlike Super Mario Bros. 3, Big Berthas are not seen with Baby Cheeps this time.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

A Big Bertha named Bessie Bass appears in Yoshi's Island DS as a mini boss, she was originally an ordinary Big Bertha living below the waters of her battleship before being enlarged by Kamek's magic. Upon being enlarged, Bessie Bass gained the abilities of a Boss Bass as well in addition to swimming below the water like a regular Big Bertha.

Trivia[]

  • The Boss Bass is one of the first two carnivorous Cheep-Cheep varieties to be introduced in the series, the other being the Boss Bass.
  • Unlike most carnavirous Cheep-Cheeps, Big Berthas only attempt to swallow Mario/Luigi if he is close otherwise, they don't relentlessly pursue them, in addition, they can be faked out by wearing a Frog Suit (something that can't be done with most carnivorous fish).
