Battle Plugs are a feature in the game Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They function in a similar vein to Badges and Battle Cards in previous games in the Mario & Luigi series.

Description[]

As their name implies, Battle Plugs resemble real plugs, albeit yellowish-white in colour. Each one has its own icon to telegraph what happens when it is used.

A Battle Plug is created via Spark Balls, which come from Sprite Bulbs. The Bros. can use Battle Plugs for a certain number of charges, but cannot reapply them if they use up all the charges in the Battle Plug. An exhausted Battle Plug will recharge after a certain amount of turns. There is a limit to how many can be used at once.

History[]

Mario and Luigi first encounter Battle Plugs when Ten drops the first Kaboom Attack Battle Plug and the Easy-Peasy Counters Battle Plug after his first fight. Getting their hands on these items, the Bros. are then attacked, which leads to a Battle Plug tutorial.

List of Battle Plugs[]

  • Kaboom attack: Represented by a hammer hitting something with a burst of fire coming off the impact. If the Bros. score an Excellent! rating with their jump or hammer attack, the target releases a burst of fire that causes damage to nearby enemies, who take a fraction of the damage taken by the target. Lasts for ten charges and will recharge after 30 turns. The plug's will not activate if the player is fighting a single enemy. The first one is immediately obtained when the Bros. defeat Ten the first time, and they can craft another using 60 Spark Balls after crafting 17. Using both causes the effect to hit all enemies.
  • Easy-Peasy Counters: Represented by a bent arm with some eighth notes nearby, this Battle Plug gives the player more rom for error when defending, with the Bros.' hammers enlarging for the hammer defense and the Bros. being able to float during the jump defense. It lasts for ten charges and will recharge after 20 turns. Immediately obtained upon defeating Ten the first time.
  • Surefooted Guard: Represented by a yellow vortex with stars partially eclipsed by a shield. This gives the Bros. immunity to the Trip and Dizzy status effects. Lasts for five charges and will recharge after 20 turns. Costs 15 Spark Balls to craft. Defeating Ten is required for crafting this plug.
  • Surprise Iron Ball: The spiked ball from the icon smashes the target for bonus damage if the player gets an Excellent! rating. Lasts for ten charges and will recharge after 30 turns. The first can be crafted from 20 Spark Balls after Ten is defeated, with the second becoming available after crafting 17 Battle Plugs. If the player equips both of these, the spike balls will deal more damage to their targets.
  • Dizzifying Attack: Represented by a yellow vortex with stars. Getting an Excellent! rating can stun the target. Lasts for 15 charges and will recharge after 20 turns.
  • Fiery Attack: Represented by a fireball. Targets hit by an Excellent! rating take fire damage and could be set on fire for bonus damage. Lasts for 15 charges and will recharge after 20 turns.
  • Icy Attack: Represented by a cyan snowball. Targets hit by an Excellent! rating take cold damage and could be frozen and unable to move for a while. Lasts for 15 charges and will recharge after 20 turns.
  • Damage Shield: Represented by a silver shield. Damage received from enemy attacks due to botched counters will receive a x0.8 multiplier. Lasts for ten charges and will recharge after 30 turns. Available when the Bros. defeat the Mega Snaptor, whose loot drop contains this Battle Plug. A stronger version called "Protectus" reduces the damage taken to 0, and lasts for 3 charges, taking four turns to recharge, and becomes available after the Bros. craft 27 Battle Plugs, costing 90 to craft.
  • Notdroppin: Represented by Mario's leg with a crown symbol near it. Any Bro. who takes enough damage to die will survive at a single hit point if he had at least two. Lasts for five charges and will recharge after 30 turns. Available after creating 17 Battle Plugs, and costs 60 Spark Balls.
  • Temperature Guard: Represented by a shield covering a fireball and magic snowball. Equipping this Battle Plug provides immunity to the Burn and Frozen status effects. Lasts for five charges and takes 20 turns to recharge. Prince Chilliam and Princess Burnadette give this Battle Plug before the Bros. start their invasion of the Brrrning Sea's Great Lighthouse Island.
  • Ouch Charge: Any damage the Bros. take will charge up a meter. Upon filling this meter, their next attack deals double damage.
  • Auto Luigi: Represented by Luigi's head. Luigi may sometimes take an extra turn following his own turns or try to search for a lost item. The Great Conductor gives this Battle Plug following his battle. Lasts for five turns and takes 20 turns to recharge.
  • Glohm Guard: Represented by a maroon smoke cloud with stars around it (possibly representing Glohm) eclipsed by a shield. When the player equips this Battle Plug, the Bros. become immune to the Glohm substance's eponymous status effect. Lasts for five charges, recharging after 20 turns. Zokket has this as part of his loot drop.
  • Back-Atcha Attack: Represented by Mario's arm surrounded by circular arrows. The Bros. may launch a counter when damaged when the player equips this Battle Plug. (They cannot perform combo attacks this way.)
  • Item Share: Represented by a glove holding a mushroom. With this Battle Plug, the Bros. will both gain the benefits of an item one of them consumes.
  • Boomerang Items: Represented by a mushroom surrounded by circular arrows. Any items the Bros. use will be returned to their inventory. This becomes available after crafting 8 Battle Plugs, and costs 40 Spark Balls to craft. Lasts five charges and recharges in 30 turns.
  • Charge Bank: Represented by a plug with a +1 graphic covering the bottom right corner. When the player equips this Battle Plug, any other Battle Plugs that would lose a charge would spare their charge, with the Charge Bank's charges decreasing instead. Lasts for three charges and takes 20 turns to recharge. Available after creating 22 Battle Plugs, with the craft cost being 70 Spark Balls.
  • Waitaminnit: When their turn ends, a Bro. may take another turn. This becomes available after creating 31 Battle Plugs. It costs 120 Spark Balls to craft and has three charges, and its recharge takes 40 turns.
  • Speedy Recharge: Any Battle Plug that reaches zero charges with this plug active only requires half the usual required turns to reacharge. This Battle Plug becomes available after creating 17 Battle Plugs and costs 60 Spark Balls to craft, lasting for five charges and taking 20 turns to recharge.

The Extension Corps[]

When the Bros. lock horns with the full Extension Corps in Fortress Zokket, Shun uses his own Battle Plugs which last for the rest of the battle upon activation. He activates each one at a specific point.

  • HUUUGE Iron Ball: Mario and Luigi will get spiked balls dropped on their heads if they take damage from the Extension Corps' attacks. Dodging Shun's barbell attack causes iron balls to fall onto whichever member gets struck. Mario and Luigi can block the balls with hammer strikes, though Ecks and Ten cannot.
  • PunishMush: Eating Mushrooms causes damage rather than healing, similar to Ashley's Assist Trophy ability in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Ultimate.
  • Theme Song: The Extension Corps dances to the music, buffing their stats.
  • Single-Minded: The Extension Corps activates this when they take enough damage. They share a single health pool, though this means they take the same damage should one take damage.
  • Invincible: The Extension Corps is invincible for a turn. On the next turn, they explode, defeating them.

Ecks can steal Battle Plugs with his rush and stab attacks as well, but not during the combo attack. Any stolen Battle Plugs are disabled for the rest of the battle, and are marked by Ecks' head.
