Super Mario

Bats are enemies that appear in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are winged creatures that often dwell in caves and attack any intruders by swooping at them.

Profile[]

Behavior[]

They are seen floating in the air and whenever they spot Mario, they try to swoop him. To defeat them jump on them or spin to knock them away. They are usually found in dark, dank galaxies or haunted galaxies such as the Ghostly Galaxy or the Slimy Spring Galaxy. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, their color is slightly darker than in Super Mario Galaxy.

History[]

Bat Cavern

Mario face to face with a Bat.

Bats make their debut in Super Mario Galaxy, in this game, they can be seen typically looming in dark caves or areas, they are seen roosting on the ceilings until Mario/Luigi approaches at which point they descend and attempt to swoop down on them to attack. A Bat can easily be beaten with a stomp or a Star Spin. Bats can be found in the Beach Bowl Galaxy, the Ghostly Galaxy, the Toy Time Galaxy, and the Sand Spiral Galaxy. An icy subspecies of the Bat called the Ice Bat is also seen in the Freezeflame Galaxy, these varieties have ice powers

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Luigi VS Bats

Bats return in Super Mario Galaxy 2 once again retaining their behaviours from before (flying around and swooping on their foes). Just as before, a Bat can be beaten with either a stomp or a Star Spin, Bats are less common in this game appearing only in the Fleet Glide Galaxy and the Slimy Spring Galaxy, additionally, Ice Bats don't reappear in this game. The Bats in this game are now a dark brown rather than reddish brown.

Bats appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Here, they can be found as one of Bowser's many cronies. Bats are first seen when Luigi first enters the Dark Lands, flying about giving him a bit of a fright. They can later be seen alongside the rest of Bowser's Army flying around during his meeting. Bats typically tend to inhabit the Dark Lands.

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that the Bats were going to be Swoopers at one stage as they has the name "BasaBasa" associated with them in the files for Super Mario Galaxy (BasaBasa being the Japanese name for Swooper), this could either be an error or perhaps they were changed to a different species during development.
  • Bats strongly resemble Buckies, a Bat species from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. It could be possible that they were designed after Buckies considering the game was built off of the same engine as Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Additionally, both have an icy counterpart (the Ice Bucky and the Ice Bat respectively).
