Backward Somersault (バック宙 Bakku chū?, Back air) is a high jump in the Super Mario series. It first appears in The Game Boy version of Donkey Kong.

Backward somersault made its debut in Super Mario 64. The method benefits the player that cannot reach places with a normal jump. Compared to side somersault, the backward somersault moves slightly backwards while the latter moves further. In most games, the player presses z, then A Button.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 64/DS[]

The Super Mario 64 instruction booklet calls the move, Back somersault. Mario can perform a backward somersault according to the Super Mario 64 instruction booklet. The player must crouch with Z Button. While crouching, the player must press A Button.

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Mario can perform the backward somersault in Super Mario Galaxy. The player must press Nunchuk Z Button then A Button to perform the technique.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Mario can perform the backward somersault in Super Mario Galaxy 2 by using the method in Super Mario Galaxy.
