Mario Party

The Back Space is a recurring type of space in the Mario Party series. It first appears in Mario Party 3, where it is known as a Reverse Space.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 3[]

ReverseSpace

Reverse Spaces only appear in Duel Mode boards. If a character lands on one, they are sent backward and cannot make any direct turns. If the character going in reverse has a partner behind them and runs into another character, then a battle occurs, with the partner from behind being able to attack the other player. On Backtrack, landing on a Reverse Space actually changes the direction of the entire board. Although Reverse Spaces do not appear in Blowhard, they are still shown on the board results screen.

Mario Party 9[]

If a character lands on a Back Space, they get to roll the Normal Dice Block again, except they instead travel backward on the board. If a Captain lands on another Back Space in direct succession, they can still roll the Dice Block an extra time. Special Dice Blocks cannot to modify these rolls.

Mario Party 10[]

Back Spaces make a reappearance, retaining their role from Mario Party 9, but are exclusive to the Mario Party mode. A different type of Back Space introduced in Mario Party: Island Tour also appears, and these ones always send the character back a set number of spaces.
