The Atari 2600 (also known as the Atari Video Computer System) is a game console released by Atari in 1977. Three games from the Mario series have been released for this system: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros.. The games for this system could also be played on the Atari 5200, ColecoVision, and Intellivision through adapters as well as on the instantly backwards-compatible Atari 7800.

In the first year, from 1977 to 1979, Atari 2600 sold just 4 million units. In 1980, sales boosted to 12 million units with the launch of Space Invaders. By the time of Great Videogame Crash of 1983, Atari 2600 sold 24 million units. It went on to sell 27.64 million units as of 18 Aug 2021.
