Aster is a protagonistic character appearing in Mario Tennis Aces. He is the guardian of the Kingdom of Bask who was tasked with watching over the Lucien.
Profile[]
Physical Appearance[]
Due to his only appearances being speech bubbles, what Aster himself looks like still remains up in the air. His speech bubbles are brown with white words and their edges are hazy.
Personality[]
Aster is dedicated to his kingdom, watching the Lucien without fail until Wario and Waluigi break in and snatch the Lucien out from under Aster's nose, distressing him. He is helpful to Mario and guides him to stop the Lucien.
History[]
Although little is known about his backstory, what is known was that Aster was tasked by King Bask to guard the Temple of Bask and keep the Lucien in check. Wario and Waluigi eventually break into the temple, stealing the Lucien out from under Aster's nose, although they know little of the racket's sapience and powers. As a result, the Wario Bros. wind up being controlled by the Lucien, their master forcing them to find five Power Stones that contain the shattered remains of the Lucien's power. Mario, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, and Kinopio team up to stop the threat, leading to their encounter with Aster in the Temple of Bask, whereupon they learn the Special Shot skill from him after learning his, the temple's, and the Lucien's backstories.
The Lucien eventually forces Mario to compete in the Lucien Cup with his thralls, decreeing that the winner takes the Power Stones from the loser so Aster bestows the Special Shot unto Princess Peach and Princess Daisy, who defeat Wario and Waluigi as a result. Mario himself defeats his brother Luigi who had fallen under the Lucien's control by this time as well. The Lucien then proceeds to possesses the Koopa King, transforming into the Bowcien, after which he and Mario face off at the Temple of Bask. Mario destroys the Lucien, causing the temple to collapse. Despite the loss of his kingdom's temple, Aster is happy with Mario restoring peace to the Kingdom of Bask. He also calls Mario a "true king of tennis" and asks him to use that power to preserve peace around the world.
Behind the Scenes[]
Name[]
Aster takes his name from the Greek word for "star," aster (written ᾰ̓στήρ). Ironically, the Lucien had that as his Japanese name.
Nomenclature[]
Aster was called "Razu" in the Japanese version, derived from a combination of the Spanish word for "light," luz, and the Egyptian Sun god Ra. His French name, "Oservis," comes from the Egyptian god of fertility and the afterlife, Wsir aka Osiris, with the change from I to E in the second syllable and the addition of a V at the start of the third syllable coming from French "servir," which means "to serve" in many sentences, although given the tennis context, this refers to putting a ball in play. The Italian and Spanish dubs simply call him "Áster," presumably derived from his English name. In Russian, he bears the name "Daymoniy," written Даймоний.
