The general layout of Lethal Lava Land remains unchanged for the mission, so it is possible to complete within other missions. In Super Mario 64 DS, if the mission itself is selected when entering the course, an additional Bob-omb Buddy is added, just as with other Red Coin missions. The Bob-omb Buddy is located at the start of the area, and by talking to it, the player can briefly see the location of every Red Coin on the Touch Screen.
Objective[]
Mario (or Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario in Super Mario 64 DS) has to collect eight Red Coins, each located above one of the platforms part of a sliding puzzle depicting Bowser. Each platform constantly slides at the gaps, so one Red Coin can always be seen above the lava. The sliding panels eventually combine to form an image of Bowser, which causes several Coins to appear the first time. Several seconds later, the sliding pieces begin to move again, unforming the image of Bowser. Once Mario has collected all eight Red Coins, a Power Star appears above the Star Marker on a rocky surface to the upper-right of the sliding puzzle.
In Super Mario 64 DS, the Red Coins are instead arranged in an aligned order above each sliding panel.
