"20,000 Koopas Under the Sea is the twenty-sixth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Its corresponding live-action segment is "Vampire Until Ready."
Synopsis[]
King Koopa scares the seaside town of Happy Harbor into making him their ruler by scaring them using a mechanical sea monster named Koopilus.
Plot[]
Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad arrive at Happy Harbor looking for help with King Koopa. Unfortunately, when they get there, they see that a sea monster is attacking ships off the shore. After the sea monster makes its attack, King Koopa addresses the citizens of Happy Harbor telling them that he'll get rid of the monster if they'll make him their king. The Marios advise the people to refuse. A strong female captain by the name of Captain Abadab comes and volunteers to get rid of the monster herself. Realizing he won't get what he wants, King Koopa angrily sulks off.
With the Marios at her side, Captain Abadab sets sail to find the sea monster. After a time of fruitless searching the group decides to dive. The sea monster soon finds them. Mario attempts to capture the creature but is instead dragged away along with Luigi and the Princess. The monster then swallows the trio leaving only Captain Abadab and Toad free.
Inside the monster, the Marios learn that it's not a monster at all but a submarine called the Koopilus. Koopa Nemo (as he now calls himself) reveals that since he can't rule Happy Harbor, he'll just destroy it instead. The Marios and the Princess are then taken in as galley slaves but Mario finds a set of bottles and sends out messages for Toad and Captain Abadab.
On the surface, Captain Abadab and Toad work to keep their wrecked ship afloat. Toad spots a bottle floating in the ocean and retrieves it. Captain Abadab reads the note and decides to hurry to Happy Harbor. She and Toad soon find the sea monster and Toad is catapulted into the creature's mouth.
Inside the Koopalis, Toad frees the Marios and the Princess but Koopa Nemo discovers their escape and sends his Bloopers after them. They still manage to escape the ship and run along the ocean floor. Unfortunately, they run into a dead end and the bloopers catch up. Just then, they find Starmen amongst the starfish. Mario and Luigi use them to become super and ward off the bloopers. They then go to confront Koopa Nemo's ship. By blocking his periscope view they manage to force Koopa Nemo to crash thereby ending the treat of his sea monster.
Trivia[]
- This episode parodies Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but it also parodies Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick, and Popeye. For example, Captain Abadab is a spoof on the name Captain Ahab and her ship the Peapod is a spoof of the Piquod, and she has the famous anchor tattoos on her arms and uses his famous line "Well blow me down!"
- This episode marked the debut of Bloopers. It was also Jim Ward's second appearance as a vampire, the first being in the episode Bats in the Basement.
