1000 Needles is a move from the Final Fantasy franchise. It makes its overall appearance in Final Fantasy V and its first Mario appearance in Mario Hoops 3-on-3.
Description[]
1000 Needles is a signature ability of Cactuars in general. In the Mario games, one particular Cactuar uses it while playing sports.
In Mario Hoops 3-on-3[]
The player can have Cactuar perform 1000 Needles by tapping out an "S" on the Touch Screen, with Cactuar dribbling the basketball in an uppercase "S" shape accordingly. When Cactuar uses 1000 Needles, the ball glows green, then throws it straight up, and dives headfirst with the ball into the basket, spiraling as it goes. White needles explode in all directions, although this is only for presentation and does not affect any of the characters.
After performing 1000 Needles, Cactuar lands onto the ground, and two 8-bit Chocobos orbit its head for a second.
If Cactuar uses 1000 Needles outside the three-point line, it jumps, winds up its right hand, and punches the ball toward the hoop. When a teammate dunks the ball into the hoop, the white needles appear.
In Mario Sports Mix[]
1000 Needles is performed the same way, but any opponent affected by 1000 Needles has a small "1000" briefly appear over them, as if they had received said number of damage like in the Final Fantasy games themselves.
