A 1 UP Heart (1UPのハート 1UP no hāto?, 1UP Heart) is an item which appears in a few Mario games, and first appears in Super Mario Land. 1 UP Hearts act the same as the more recurring 1-Up Mushrooms in that they grant Mario or another character a 1-Up.
The reason for 1 UP Hearts appearing in a few Mario games for the Game Boy instead of a 1-Up Mushroom is likely because of the system's monochromatic palette, as 1-Up Mushrooms are generally distinguished from Super Mushrooms from having a green coloration.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Land[]
1-Up (1UPハート 1UP hāto?, 1UP Heart) make their first appearance. They can be found after the minigames. When Mario collects a 1-Up Heart, he will receive extra life.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[]
The 1-Up Heart returned in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins with the same function but different sprite design. The artwork differentiates the monochromatic sprite. The sprite of the 1-Up Heart has a lighter color inside the sprite.
In Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]
1 UP Hearts reappeared in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy. Hence the name, "1 UP" appears on the sprite.
