1-UP Studio (formerly known as Brownie Brown until 2013) is a video game company entirely owned by Nintendo. It is based in Tokyo, Japan, and was founded by many previous Square Enix staff that retired due to creative differences. The company has also developed mainly JRPGs for handheld game systems.

History[]

Part of the development for Super Mario 3D Land was outsourced to 1-UP Studio in order to have the game released for the 2011 Holiday season. Director Koichi Hayashida supervised the team to make sure that they would understand Nintendo's philosophy in designing games and work in harmony with the main development team. 1-UP Studio was also the developer for Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Super Mario Odyssey.
