'Stache or Stache (Horn for Bowser) is a statistic that is featured throughout the Mario & Luigi series. They are similar to Luck, as seen in other RPG games, as it gives Mario, Luigi, and Bowser more chances of landing a Lucky hit.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, this statistic provide discounts for items purchased at shops, and allows players to sell them at high prices. It is also given to Baby Mario and Baby Luigi in Partners in Time, even though they do not have mustaches.

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, it has an effect on the type of scratch card the player receives when purchasing items. None of these features appear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, therefore the statistic is only used for lucky hits. However, in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, it also increases the likelihood of enemies dropping items after battle.

In Superstar Saga (plus its remake), Bowser's Inside Story (plus its remake), and Paper Jam, this statistic can be increased through level ups. They can also be increased through Teehee Blends and Teeheespressos, but only in Superstar Saga and its remake, as well as Stache/Flex Beans, which are introduced in Dream Team.

The Spirited Item Battle Plug in Mario & Luigi: Brothership causes Candy to boost Stache temporarily. The Gamble Hammer, which Milltons can drop when slain, provides a boost as well.

Lucky Hits[]

Lucky hits can occur whenever a Bro. successfully deals damage to an enemy. Lucky hits are stronger than their "non-lucky" counterparts, and are marked by a unique sound and visual effect along with the text "LUCKY" appearing. They are analogous to critical hits from most role-playing games, but should not be confused with actual critical hits, which are the result of exploiting a weakness.

Chances of happening:[]

The formulae below use the following variables and constants:

  • LuckyChance is the chance that the lucky hit will happens.
  • PlayerSTACHE is usually identical to the Stache of the attacking character, but the Cobalt Necktie induces a x2 multiplier while the Mushluck Pants and Shroom Slacks increase the wearer's STACHE in-battle depending on the number of Mushrooms Mario and Luigi have in their inventory: +51/256 for each regular or Super Mushroom, +1/4 for each Ultra Mushroom, and +19/64 for each Max Mushroom.
  • MinChance is the minimum chance for the lucky hit to happen.
  • MaxChance is the maximum chance that the lucky hit can happen.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

The variable EnemySTACHE is calculated with the targeted foe's level and the average of the 'Stache stats that Mario and Luigi would have at that level.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and future games.[]

The variable EnemyLEVEL represents the targeted foe's level. In this game, MinChance and MaxChance are locked at 1 and 99.

In Brothership, lucky hits cannot occur with critical hits, damage dealt to the Pipegunk by switching the arena to the opposite temperature, or striking Reclusa with a Bro Bomb during the first phase of the final battle.
