Super Mario Mario & Luigi Super Smash Bros.

! Blocks, also known as Exclamation Mark Blocks, are similar to Question Blocks, yet tend to serve more specific purposes. They appear in Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Maker 2.

In Super Mario World[]

!Block SMW

In this game, there are four different varieties, but Mario firstly has to find the appropriate Switch Palaces so that he will be able to hit the blocks. They come in colors of yellow, green, blue and red.

Each block --aside from the blocks that can't be opened-- give a different reward (when Mario --or Luigi-- jumps on it):

  • Yellow - Super Mushroom (Palace in World 1)
  • Green - Cape Feather (Palace in World 2)
  • Red - Unbreakable (Palace in World 3)
  • Blue - Unbreakable (Palace in World 5)

The red and blue blocks contain nothing (no power-up). And they only are used as platforms or walls.

In Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS[]

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, the ! blocks reappear serving a slightly different purpose. Yellow blocks are already unlocked and hold either coins or, more rarely, a Power Star. Sometimes releasing a star from a Yellow block is the objective for a mission, or it is one of the castle's secret stars. The other three variants (red, green and blue) are Cap Blocks, and they have to be unlocked by finding the corresponding Cap Switch.

In Super Mario Maker 2[]

In Super Mario Maker 2 a ! block, when hit, releases another large block in a set direction. You can hit it a set number of times to reveal a path using the new blocks (the path which appears using ! blocks is set by the course maker). All blocks spawned using the ! block will disappear after an amount of time. The ! block and the blocks it spawns when hit are 2x2 blocks each.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Blue ! Blocks connect to a desolate platform where Peach is captured, nearby the location where Bowser is captured.

Different variants of ! Blocks appear in World of Light at Molten Fortress. ! Blocks will appear after activating the ! Switch. The player may activate ! Switches in order to reawaken Peach and Bowser.
